Florida Courses - Some of the best!
The Best Sunshine State Golf You Haven't Played (yet)
There are some unbelieveable courses in the Sunshine state. I'm sure you're aware of some of the usual big names, Doral "Blue Monster", Bay Hill,Seminole, & TPC Sawgrass . . . . but there are a bunch of tracks, some obscure & some that you may have heard about, that you probably haven't teed it up on. If you are a resident in Florida or just come down to vacation, these courses are ALL a must play at some point of your golf life.
Here are a list of some of those:
World Woods "Pine Barrens" - you've probably heard of this track, now go play it! Annually Ranked top 15 in the U.S public courses. Tom Fazio's ode to Pine Valley.
#16 at Pine Barrens
This course is one of my personal favorites . . . . .
The course routing is second to none, You will use every club in your bag
4th at Coral creek
Coral Creek Club - an ultra exclusive club on the Gulf of Mexico, in the small seaside town of Placida .In 2008 they hosted The Florida State Mid Amateur Championship .
This place has the feel of Sea Island or Kiawah with a touch Florida. Anytime you see an event being played there, sign up for it or call Karen Conroy at the club and beg to get on as a guest.
A no frills public course that is the closest thing in course design to the Great Jupiter Hills,
might be the best value in the state.13th at Deltona Club
Just like Coca Cola , this is the REAL THING. This club was founded by William Clay Ford & Bob Hope in 1970. The best course in the entire state, BAR NONE & and some people outside of S.Florida still haven't heard of it ! the 1987 U.S amateur was played there. If you get invited here, it will be one of best golf experiences of your life. . . . go to their website and drool .
Southern Hills Plantation
If you join Execgolf , the membership allows you to play this exclusive Pete Dye track(located just outside of Brooksville ), twice for an extremely modest rate. This track's topography, has some thinking they're on a piece of property somewhere up North . 7 yds from the tips and a rating & slope of 77.2/138 . . . . . . good luck!
"Mission Inn "El Campeon "
In the small town of Howey Inn the Hills, this resort course is over 80 years old and one of the most unique routings as well as elavation changes you won't find anywhere in Florida except for Sugarloaf .
This course was recently ranked in the "Top 10 New Courses in the World"(located west of Orlando in Minneola ) and because of a horrible economy and real estate market, Hampton Golf inc. has had no choice but to open it up to the public just to keep revenue streams going. One day this gorgeous track will be totally exclusive(as they intended it), so play it while you can. The course was designed with a minimalist approach and brags to be the highest point on the peninsula, with elevation changes of nearly 300 feet. The par 4 -13 th , is a 500 yd par 4 over looking Lake Apopka . I had 96 yds for my approach there during a tournament there in December . . . 3 months later, I had 224 into the same hole. When they have this course in great shape it might be the best test of golf in the state, along with Southern Hills Plantation.
Ocean course at Hammock Beach
This Ginn resort course is the first oceanside links designed in florida since Donald Ross designed Seminole some 80 years ago. Jack Nicklaus created this masterpiece a decade ago, located just north of St.Augustine in the city of Palm Coast. A hand full of holes run along the Atlantic Ocean, the 9 th and 18 th are two of the best and toughest golf holes you'll play anywhere. If Jupiter Hills and the "Quarry" at Black Diamond are the best in the state, this one is not far behind.
Victoria Hills Club
This track is located in Deland , just west of Daytona . Super fast huge greens with a ton of undulation. This course is just as challenging tee to dance floor with most holes bordered by huge mature Florida native Live Oaks. Bring your "A" game at this gem or prepare to be fatally wounded by this gorgeous layout.
